Accounting Program Faculty Spotlights

Our faculty puts the success of our students first. Students in the program receive a one-to-one consultation with professors at the start of the program. Most faculty have more than ten years of teaching experience at the University of Miami as well as professional and practical experience. Prior teaching experience at MIT, Duke, the University of Michigan, the University of Rochester, and Georgetown University with prior professional experience from the American Taxation Association, Ernst & Young, Price Waterhouse, ExxonMobil, and The United States Government.

    Shirley Dennis-Escoffier received her doctorate from the University of Miami and returned to the University after teaching in Hawaii and California. Dennis-Escoffier is a Certified Public Accountant licensed to practice in Florida and has work experience in both corporate and public accounting. She is a past president of the American Taxation Association and served on the Education Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Dennis-Escoffier has received several teaching awards, including the University of Miami Excellence in Teaching Award and the Miami Herbert Business School Excellence in Teaching Award. She has published numerous articles in tax and accounting journals as well as several books, including Taxation for Decision Makers.


    Mark Friedman earned his doctorate from New York University in New York City, where he passed the CPA. For more than 38 years, Friedman has helped students the University of Miami understand how to integrate accounting into professional and personal lives. He is actively involved in the Executive MBA, the Graduate Online Educational Incentive, the Special Accelerated Accounting program, and the Summer Boot Camp. He is also a member of the American Accounting Association.

    In addition to preparing students for a career in business, Friedman maintains close contact with the business community and the accounting profession. He is the past president of the Miami Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, past chairman of the Micro Computer Committee of the Dade Chapter of the FICPA, and has received the Educators Award.


    Joe Genovese is an adjunct instructor and teaches auditing. His experience includes 38 years as a partner and consultant with Ernst & Young and working in the Inspection Division of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. His practical experience includes the functional areas of auditing, transaction advisory due diligence, capital markets consulting, and QRM-independence consulting.

    Genovese has worked both domestically and internationally, including seven years in Brazil. Additionally, he has traveled and worked extensively throughout the world on various projects and assignments. His experience comes from a variety of industries, including manufacturing, real estate, financial services, beverage, pharmaceutical, construction, retail and wholesale, governmental, and not-for-profit.

    Genovese graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and is currently a licensed CPA in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York.


    Oscar Holzmann is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Miami, where he teaches Financial Accounting undergraduate and graduate courses. He is a member of the Board of Directors of BFC Financial Corp., a public company with holdings in the real estate, finance, hospitality, food, and manufacturing industries.

    Professor Holzmann is a member of the American Accounting Association and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He has published in Accounting, Organization and Society, The Accounting Review, and other academic journals. Additionally, he is a co-author of the FASB column for the Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance.


    Seth Levine attended the University of Miami, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1983, his Master in Professional Accounting degree in 1985, and his Master of Business Administration in 1989. He began his professional career as an auditor and consultant with Price Waterhouse in 1985 and became a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida in 1987. Levine has been teaching for the University of Miami since 1990 and has been a senior faculty member for the Becker CPA Review Course since 1989.


    Mario Perez earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1999 and a master's degree in taxation in 2004 from Florida International University. After graduating with his bachelor's degree, he worked for ExxonMobil as a Senior Accountant. In 2006 he joined the faculty at the Miami Herbert Business School. In addition to working with the University of Miami, Perez is also a leading faculty member for the Becker CPA Review in South Florida. He teaches the Financial and Audit sections of the CPA exam and is ranked as one of the best instructors in the nation. During the summer, he teaches an intensive CPA review course at the Miami Herbert Business School to help accounting graduates become certified.


    Manuel Sicre is a Certified Management Accountant. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Florida International University, his Master of Business Administration from St. Thomas University, and his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.

    Sicre is a full-time accounting lecturer at the University of Miami, where he has lectured since 1998, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. He also teaches in online formats as well as in Spanish for international students. Additionally, he acts as a business consultant for small to mid-sized businesses and does significant work for not-for-profit organizations.

    Sicre has worked for the banking industry for more than 30 years, including five and a half years for the U.S. government. His work primarily focused on operations as well as accounting areas and has served as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for several privately and publicly held banking institutions. He has also served as CFO for several mortgage companies and a health care provider.


    Michael Werner is a lecturer and the Director of Accounting for the master’s programs at the University of Miami. He is also a visiting professor in the Department of Accounting at the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

    Werner has a diverse background in accounting, information systems, management, and strategy implementation. He is a Certified Public Accountant, holds a Master of Professional Accounting and a doctorate in management science and engineering, and has published several textbooks with Prentice-Hall, Kendall Hunt Publishing, and Li Xin Accounting Publishing.

    Werner was the past president of the Florida Association of Accounting Educators. He currently serves on its steering committee and is often invited to speak at conferences and universities in the United States and China.
